Ireland in Sweden to cut new disc

Ireland in Sweden to cut new disc

By PETER FELDMAN

John Ireland, the South African musician who had a major hit here last year with the song “I Like…” left for Sweden at the weekend to record his new album in Stockholm.
He has managed to evade the Swedish Government ban on South Africans because John is the holder of a British passport.

His last smash-hit album was released in South Africa exactly a year ago.
John has written a quantity of new material, and he will spend two weeks in a Swedish studio putting together the album.

The tapes will then be rushed back to Johannesburg for his record company to release in time for the Christmas market.

Chris Kritzinger, the head of Ireland’s Johan nesburg record company, said there were major considerations which prompted them to take a decision to record overseas.

It was felt that Swedish studios were especially geared to handle recordings of electronic instruments, as is the case with John Ireland’s music, and that by recording in Sweden the album would stand a better chance in the international market place.

Chris admitted that he had difficulty selling John’s last album overseas, and detected in negotiations a strong anti-South African feeling in certain music circles.

John Ireland was nominated for several Sarie Awards last year but, because of his decision to record overseas, the artist may not qualify in terms of the Sarie rules for nomination next year.

New Ireland LP was worth the wait

She Speaks To Me — John Ireland — (CBK 7013)

by Peter Feldman

John Ireland, who caused such a flutter last year in local pop circles with his “I Like …” single hit, has waited a whole year to unveil his new album.

And, in my humble opinion, this wait has been well worth it. John recorded “She Speaks To Me” in a studio in Stockholm, and the electronic pyrotechnics he employs here have never sounded better. His writing, too, shows a perceptive line in thinking, and his word imageries are quite masterful.

The tone of the album is a carefully balanced piece of work; doom-laden songs such as “Neutron” are mixed with cheery, tongue-in-cheek ditties such as “The Office Party.” He also includes another sensuous song, “Loving You Is So Easy,” which roughly fits the same rhythmic mold as “I Like …”

But the point of the album is that it doesn’t fit into a specific bag but illuminates John Ireland as a total all-rounder.
